Taking The First Step To Be A Great Floral Design Demonstrator

“Creativity involves breaking out of expected patterns in order to look at things in a different way.”

Edward de Bono

Hello Fellow Floral Designer

How do you feel when you are asked to get up in front of a group and demonstrate a floral design?
Do you have a million ideas but can’t turn those ideas into a stable design that you can talk about whilst putting it together in front of an audience?
How do you talk and put your design together at the same time?
Will anyone listen to your voice?
Will the audience think you know what you are doing?

How would it feel to be confident of your voice, of what you will say when you are demonstrating your design so you can focus on being creative and sharing your floral design knowledge with your flower friends?

Here’s how to bridge the gap between how you feel now and how you will feel when you can focus on your design not your nerves or how you sound.

WHY ARE PRESENTATION SKILLS IMPORTANT? ISN’T IT ALL ABOUT THE FLORAL DESIGN SKILLS?

When I first starting attending floral design demonstrations and workshops (many years ago), I often felt I could help the demonstrator to present the design information better. Not the floral design itself of course, but the presentation side because my former corporate life of 30+ years and my current consulting time is all about coaching subject matter experts in presentation skills.

These days I delight in providing advice to local and international floral design judges and demonstrators. It’s an area where I can give back to the floral design world in payment for the generous sharing I continue to receive for my own development as an enthusiastic floral designer.

WHAT ABOUT DOING ONLINE FLORAL DESIGN DEMONSTRATIONS?

2020 was a year that completely changed how we learn about floral design. Across the world, well known floral designers have taken to sharing their design skills in a much more technical environment. Do you speak in a different way when demonstrating online? How do you get organised with microphones and other equipment when this used to be done by the organisers at a floral design demonstration venue? How long will an audience watch a floral design demonstration online?

The answers to all of these questions are part of the coaching you can access through Floral Art Coach.

The focus of the coaching is to work with you and your personal presentation style so you can be a more confident presenter. You will be able to impart your knowledge and help nurture more of us who love flowers, floral art and floral design in all its many forms.

WHY DO FLORAL DESIGNERS NEED A DIFFERENT APPROACH TO PRESENTATIONS?

The information you are imparting and the groups to which you present are specialised. For your presentation, you are the subject matter expert. Your audience members will be writing down notes and sketching your designs all at the same time as listening to you.

You need to understand the physicality of presenting a demonstration or workshop. You need to have a “roadmap” of the information you want to present as much as you have a plan for your floral design. You need to be able to work the technical side of online presentations.
